..and I say "WTF!"
Moncton, New Brunswick...the "City of No Expectations"!
says New Brunswick:
"We Need Immigrants! Now!"
Immigrants are reportedly going to fastrack to New Brunswick?
Oh, the Immigrants will fast track to New Brunswick, and then they will leave if they have any family connections elsewhere!
Greetings! I am one those skilled Immigrants that New Brunswick is screaming for..only now, I'm the one who is screaming!
I WAS in is the construction field, until I came here!
Moncton is so full of crooked contractors, I can't get an honest job!
I can however, work illegally "under the table" and risk deportation, but I choose to stay on the high road.
That doesn't stop many local people from working 'under the table' while collecting EI and complaining about immigrants "stealing" their jobs though!
For five years, I tried to get back into my trade of choice to complete my apprenticeship. I was 1-1/2 years away from getting my Electrical license. I was told that I would have NO PROBLEM finishing up here...I WAS NEEDED. I know better now. Of course the only contractors who want to hire me, want me to work illegally. "We'll see how it goes the first six months" they say, thinking I'm some local rube who has no knowledge of the Apprenticeship Laws of New Brunswick. As if I'm going to say "Duhhh! Okay!" . Unfortunately, there are too many people who do just that. I cannot compete with fools who are willing to put themselves at a disadvantage. That isn't to say that all contractors are crooked, only the ones who had an opening for me. It's going on seven years that I've been out of my trade. I see no point going back now.
Now when I complain about this, I get the "A-job-is-a-job-is-a-job-a-buck-is-a-buck-is-a-buck-Don't-you-want-to-work!?!?!" baloney that may have served New Brunswick well three generations ago, but folks, those days are long since passed...New Brunswick still suffers the fallout from the same ignorance and complacency that infested the Maritimes back then!
Worse, it appears that New Brunswickers look for security and comfort and have a sense of pride in that same loser attitude today! Ahh, the "Good Old Days" when an employer would abuse the workers and the workers would regret they hadn't been abused more.
And no, I don't find a reason to respect anyone who drops out of school today to work in a dying temp-industry because they have a family to support, or some other reason born of terminal stupidity! Ultimately when I work, my taxes are supporting these losers who gripe about me, the Immigrant Stealing Jobs they themselves are too stupid to get hired for because they quit school. " I hated School" is the mantra of so many dropouts...I hated it too! But I figured sleeping in my car was not an option!
To add insult to injury, these same loser dropouts know someone who can get them a job in construction for cash, so they don't have to pay taxes. But what happens thirty years down the road and it's retirement time? OOPS, no retirement! Why? The fools never paid into it! All the while, they think they got it good...until they get hurt on the job they shouldn't have been at, and the reality of working under the table comes home to roost sooner!! But hey, it's not what you know, it's who you know! And if it was good enough for their fathers to waste their potential by quitting school and pushing a broom, then by golly, it's good for them too! But you'd better be bilingual if you want to push that broom!
Take a long look at the construction going on in Moncton...If it's commercial, it's likely done by a company and crew from away...if it's residential, it's been slapped together by local guys who never graduated high school and the contractors are paying them nothing close to what they legally should. Of course, when the workers aren't on the books they need only shut up and be thankful they're getting paid cash. The contractors are cutting corners too. Just ask anyone who bought a Condo in Dieppe if they're happy with it. They were until it started falling apart!
Let me give you, dear reader (if any), an idea about what goes on in the trade of my choice (electrical) in these parts. When a house or some other electrical installation is completed it is supposed to be Megger tested. A Megger is a device that puts one million volts of electrical pressure in the circuits to test for any shorts in the circuits. Shorts that would result in Electrical fires. Too many Electrical Contractors in New Brunswick do not do megger tests, because "they know their work". If I handed you a pistol and told you that it was okay to hold it to your head and squeeze the trigger because "I know the chamber's empty", would you? Free Clue: the answer is "NO!". So, why is such an evasion of responsibility tolerated regarding electricity? It saves time which saves a buck. Life, apparently, is cheap. Shop Wal-Mart.
The Underground Economy, 60% illiteracy rate, incompetent governance and too much apathy about life in general in the people themselves, are making New Brunswick what it is today- the laughing stock of Canada, and the last stop before employers ship jobs overseas.
The only work I can find is temp work (which should be outlawed!) or the 12 week employment (which should be investigated!) that loves you the first 11 weeks, but fires you at the end of the 12th week with the worst excuses I've ever heard!
If my daughter weren't in a good school and my family within a good support network, I would have taken them West by now. Alberta is not the Golden Dream Easterners think it is however, and I will not subject them to that misery! So, for their benefit, I stay here. I'm sure I'll figure something out, but the Government of NB will not be able to take credit for it!
Bilingualism is somewhat of a problem but the racism is even worse, and I'm White!
My Family and I had to endure racial epithets from some militant Acadian Historian because we didn't speak French! He used to work at U de M (you lucky people)! He was a lovely neighbor! He would tell me to go back where I came from. My wife and daughter are Canadian, though...but in this troll's eyes we were all "les Anglais". He would steal stuff from our garage and put it in his garden...I would have to take it back and I finally had to put a lock on the door to keep him out...guess who had a fit? Yep, Him!
He said I locked the garage because I was a racist and I hated Acadians...no, it was because I was paying the rent on the garage, not him, and because he was a jackass! I'm still missing stuff that disappeared during that time. Welcome to Canada indeed!
So New Brunswick, It's time to get off the "Why is life so hard" pot, stop hoping us "Friggin' foreigners" will bail you out. Fix yourself, and stop lying to us to get us to come share in your self-made misery!
I know, I know..."Well if it's so bad, why don't you leave then, you foreigner loser-type-person!?!?" bleats the local ignorant yokel.
As I said above somewhere, my wife and daughter are Canadian and what they need on a personal level resides where we reside. Do you honestly think I'm going to let the Status Quo remain? No Sir! I will be a Citizen soon, and I Will get into Politics. And I will drag you dead woods kicking and screaming into the 21st Century, because my daughter deserves better than what many of you who have been born here settle for, or run away from! It Fight or Flight, and this Soon-to-be Canadian chooses to fight!
